EcoCounil Update: Earth Day

St Michael’s Eco Council wants to wish everybody a very fruitful Earth Day! To those unaware, as a service to our school, Eco Council organized a massive cleanup of the school grounds. As a senior, this writer was given the very special privilege to clean the senior parking lot.

I could lecture you guys about the importance of the environment and keeping our school clean, and I’ll get to that, but first I’m going to try to be funny. After spending around thirty minutes in the senior parking lot, here are a few of the interesting items I found:

  • Wrappers

  • Plastic water bottles

  • Newspapers

  • Caf containers

  • Golf balls

  • The handles of golf clubs. Not the golf club. Just the handle

  • A tiny Tom and Jerry chair

  • A whole bike tire

This is obviously very funny, in a sad way. Generally, it's considered good manners not to leave trash on the floor of our houses, schools or malls, because other people use those spaces. How are the outdoors any different? Remember that the Earth is the one thing all humans collectively share. So we all collectively have a part in keeping our home clean.

Put your garbage in the proper place and encourage your friends to do their parts. If you see something like a plastic bottle or dried up marker on the floor, throw it away even if it isn’t “yours”. You will only be helping others. As Catholics, we’re called to live for others, especially the most vulnerable among us. Squirrels and birds don’t have the agency to protect their homes, so we have to do it for them.

A very special thank you to every single student and teacher who helped with the cleanup. Your efforts are not in vain. Especially to Mrs. De Faria and Ms. Iozzo who selflessly gave their time to organize this massive cleanup.

Happy Earth day St Michael’s. Let's keeping loving the Earth.
