St Hubert of Liege was a Middle Ages Saint and the first bishop of Liege, a region in Belgium. He initially held a privileged life, as the son of a noble, and married Floribane, the daughter of a count. However, he lost his beloved wife in childbirth and this turned him from court and church, preferring to spend his time hunting instead. It is said that on Good Friday, he was hunting in the forest when a stag appeared to him, a cross floating above its antlers, and he heard a voice tell him that if he did not start to lead a holy life, he would go into hell. Hubert immediately repented and asked God what he needed to do. For the rest of his life, Hubert served as a bishop, distributing large amounts of money to the poor and helped to defend the natural forests of the area. He was well liked, because of his down to earth nature and his outdoorsmen skills, and he eventually died peacefully. Today, he is venerated as the patron of ethical hunting, archers and mathematicians.
