Mr. Fontaine has been an important part of the St. Michael’s community since 2018. Usually teaching grade 11 and 12 English, this year, he has taken on a new role as the student success teacher through guidance, resource, and the pathways room. Before coming to St. Michael’s, he taught in Mississauga for 10 years. With a passion for helping students succeed, Mr. Fontaine continues to make a positive impact both inside and outside the classroom.

Mr. Fontaine showed that his journey to becoming a teacher wasn’t always straightforward. “I caused a lot of trouble in high school,” he admitted, “And I felt there was a need for a teacher who understands different types of students.” It wasn't until university that he committed to being a teacher, inspired by the idea of helping others find their own paths. With degrees in English and history, he has spent 16 years teaching English.

When asked about his favourite part of teaching, Mr. Fontaine said it’s seeing his students grow and succeed. “Working with students and seeing them develop is what matters most,” he said. He finds joy in daily and weekly successes, just as much as the big milestones. He also enjoys coaching baseball, lacrosse, and helping students through both their victories and challenges. Outside of school he keeps busy playing guitar, watching sports, working out, and spending time with family and friends.

Mr. Fontaine believes what makes St. Michaels special is the strong sense of community. “It takes everyone to make St. Michael’s great,” he explained. He also notes that students today face more pressure than ever to plan their futures which can cause anxiety. Despite these challenges, he continues to encourage positivity, balance, and teamwork amongst students.

As someone who struggled in high school himself, Mr. Fontaine now uses his experiences to support and inspire others. His message to students is simple. “Follow your dreams and always be yourself. Don’t worry about what other people think.” He hopes to be remembered as, “a caring adult who always gave 100% and made the school a better place.” Through his kindness, honesty, and dedication, Mr. Fontaine remains a role model for the St. Michael’s community.
